SOA Architecture

In the three-day workshop “SOA Architecture”, the technical foundation for SOA infrastructures and project solutions are illuminated. The aim of the course is to learn about the functions of the most important architecture elements of an SOA such as ESB, security platform, repository, registry, policy management, etc. and to consider how these elements interact in an enterprise SOA.

Practical examples will be treated in many practical exercises. The solutions will together be evaluated to determine whether they meet the desired quality criteria such as scalability, security, interoperability, extendibility, robustness and vendor independence.

Along with basic knowledge of the architecture elements themselves, knowledge of open standards such as XML, XSD, SOAP, WSDL, etc. as well as SOA architecture examples belong to the core competencies that will be imparted on the course.

The course concludes with a look at the technical SOA modelling, from where the orders on the technical SOA are derived.

SOA Modelling

The three-day training course “SOA Modelling” treats the complete process from a technical use case and the first idea for a service through to the completed WSDL. The focus of the workshop is on the first steps of the SOA modelling, in which subject-matter knowledge, tailoring the services, integration in the enterprise architecture, etc. are important.

As especially at the beginning of the design process many people are involved who prefer informal presentation formats, this must be reflected in the process. On top of this, the modelling in a formal notation such as UML, BPMN or WSDL requires a certain degree of precision that cannot be achieved at an early stage of the design process. The modelling of alternative scenarios, rejections, improvements, etc. must follow quickly and simply and be fully understandable for all participants. As a result, a design process for SOA proceeds in two phases – an informal (paper and PowerPoint) and formal (UML, BPMN and WSDL) phase. The “correct” time point for the transfer from the informal to the formal design, appropriate to the specific organisation, must be found.

The “SOA Modelling” training course takes these considerations into account and provides a consistent methodology that can be put to the test in countless training exercises.

SOA Governance

The two-day training course delivers a practical introduction to the work of an SOA governance organisation and suggestions for the structuring of the organisation as well as definitions of the roles and responsibilities. The incorporation of enterprise governance is also considered. The typical tasks are presented by means of a structured framework that can be adapted to the requirements of the participants’ own enterprise.

The tasks of the SOA governance organisation stretch from the definition of the mandatory standards – the rules of the game for SOA – and the provision of support teams through to the verification of the compliance with these standards. The framework delivered in this course encompasses topics such as processes, funding, metrics, organisational structures, role models, people-change management and training.

The monitoring of so-called SOA governance touchpoints is particularly important in an SOA organisation. In many enterprises, the accompaniment of the project proposal process, the management of the service portfolio, alignment with the company architecture, funding and WSDL quality assurance are of particular interest.

SOA Testing

AThanks to the degree of abstraction of an SOA and the description of the services through service contracts, service-oriented architectures are particularly amenable to tests. The two-day training course “SOA Testing” delivers a practical introduction as well as the technical and organisational basics.

Test cases, which in traditional architectures are frequently a downstream frill, are a central deliverable in an SOA as a constituent part of the service contract. The software quality is therefore significantly increased compared to traditional architectures.

Within the framework of the two-day training course, the organisational processes will also be illuminated, in order to allow the “Test First” paradigm associated with the “Contract First” paradigm. Regression tests in particular will be dealt with.

In addition, the training course delivers the necessary technical fundamentals as well as many practical examples and exercises.

Training modules
The “SOA Testing” training course encompasses the following training modules:

Module 1 – Introduction
Module 3 – Web Services Standards
Module 5 – SOA Modelling Basics
Module 14 – SOA Testing

SOA Security

Service-oriented architectures form the basis for enterprise-wide integration as well as for cloud computing, which has the aim of distributing the company’s data and business logic “in the cloud”. With the flexible sourcing strategies enabled as a result, the cost efficiency, flexibility and scalability of the IT infrastructures can be increased. A precondition for this is a solid security structure, which will be treated in the two-day training course “SOA Security” from technical, functional and organisational viewpoints.

This training course classifies the fundamental risks and provides proven solution approaches for SOA security that cover the technical, functional and organisational measures.

Established solution models such as XML gateways as well as underlying technical standards such as WS-Security, WS-Trust and XACML are presented in detail.

SOA Hands-on Week – WS* und Testing

IIn the framework of the SOA Hands-on Week “WS-* and Testing”, practical exercises for software developers and technical architects are undertaken. Participants learn to develop and test web services according to open standards.

IThe WS-* standards training session is the introduction to the web services world. In this unit, participants learn by means of practical examples to develop their own WSDLs and XSDs according to WS-I. Advantages and disadvantages of different design approaches will be discussed in the group. Error handling and versioning in particular will be covered.

DThe training sessions covering the subject “Testing” are aimed at developers who already have a basic knowledge of XML and WS-* standards (as imparted in the first two days of the SOA Hands-on Week). In these training sessions, test drivers will be developed with which regression tests for web services can be constructed.

After numerous requests, SOAPARK offers the SOA Hands-on Week for the first time in 2011.

In the SOA Hands-on Week “WS-* and Testing”, the following training sessions are offered:

Days 1+2: WS* Standards
Day 3: Functional testing of web services and compliance
Day 4: Performance Tests von Web Services
Day 5: Security Testing von Web Services

The training sessions are independent of one another and can be booked individually.

SOA Hands-on Week – SOA Security

In the framework of the SOA Hands-on Week “SOA Security”, practical exercises for software developers and technical architects are undertaken that are concerned with security in the participants’ companies.

The training session on certificates provides the technical foundation of SOA security. Different certificate types are considered and the generation, distribution and regular renewal of the certificates is practised.

In the “STS, WS-Trust, XACML & Co” session, participants learn the standards with the help of which a securer exchange of messages between web service endpoints can be ensured.

In the “XML Firewalls” training session, security is considered to the full extent. Scenarios such as cross-domain and cross-company interfaces are considered. The securing of web services that are to be offered on the Internet is also looked at.
